PS5 no signal? How to tell if it’s the HDMI port

Your PS5 powers on, the light is steady, but the TV says “no signal”. Before you assume the worst, work through these checks. If none of them bring the picture back, a damaged HDMI port is the most likely cause, and it is the repair we carry out most often in our Lewisham workshop.

Rule out the simple causes first

  1. Try another HDMI cable. Use the cable that came with the console, or any certified high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable. Cheap cables fail more often than consoles do.
  2. Try another HDMI input and another TV. A faulty TV port or the wrong input selected is easy to miss.
  3. Restart in safe mode. Switch the PS5 off, then hold the power button until you hear the second beep (about seven seconds). Connect the controller with a USB cable and choose “Change video output” to reset the resolution.
  4. Check the HDMI settings. In safe mode you can switch off HDCP or lower the output to 1080p to test whether the TV is struggling with the signal.

Signs the HDMI port itself is damaged

  • The cable feels loose or wobbles in the port, or will only work at a certain angle.
  • You can see bent, flattened or missing pins inside the port.
  • The picture flickers or cuts out when the console or cable is moved.
  • The console was dropped, moved while plugged in, or the cable was pulled sideways.
  • Safe mode, a new cable and a different TV all still give “no signal”.

A damaged port cannot be bent back safely. The port is soldered to the motherboard, so it needs to be removed and replaced with a new one. Forcing a cable in or trying to straighten pins usually makes the damage worse and can tear the pads on the board.

How we fix it

We open the console, remove the old port, clean and inspect the solder pads, fit a new HDMI port and test the picture at full resolution before you collect it. Most HDMI repairs are done within a couple of hours.

  • PS5 HDMI port replacement: £85, fixed price
  • PS5 full service: £160 for a new HDMI port, a full internal deep clean and fresh liquid metal, saving £50 compared with booking them separately
  • Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on the parts and work

If the port turns out to be fine and the fault is elsewhere, we tell you what we found and the price before any further work.
