A PS5 that sounds like a jet engine, shows an overheating warning or switches itself off mid-game is almost always struggling to get rid of heat. The two fixes we recommend most are a deep clean and a liquid metal re-application. Here is what each one does and how to choose.
Common signs your PS5 is overheating
- The fan is noticeably louder than it used to be, even in menus.
- You see the warning “Your PS5 is too hot” or the console shuts down during play.
- The vents or the air coming out feel very hot.
- Games stutter or the console freezes after a while.
First, give it space. Stand it upright or flat with at least 10 cm clear around the vents, away from a cabinet door or radiator. If the noise and heat continue, the problem is inside the console.
Deep clean: £80
Dust and pet hair build up on the fan and heatsink fins and block the airflow. You cannot reach them without opening the console, and a vacuum or compressed air through the vents rarely shifts it. Our deep clean is a full strip-down: we clean the fan, heatsink, vents and dust catchers, then test temperatures. It is the right fix when the console is loud and hot but has not started shutting down.
Liquid metal re-application: £45
The PS5 uses liquid metal between the processor and the heatsink instead of ordinary thermal paste. Over time, or after a knock or being moved on its side, it can dry out or shift, and temperatures climb even when the console is clean. We clean off the old compound and apply fresh liquid metal safely, with the protective seal in place. It is the right fix when the console overheats or shuts down even though it is not especially dusty.
Overheating and fan repair: £60
If the fan is grinding, rattling or not spinning at all, we diagnose the cause and repair or replace the fan. We confirm the price before any parts are fitted.
PS5 full service: £160
Our full service combines a new HDMI port, a deep clean and fresh liquid metal in one visit, saving £50 compared with booking them separately. It suits older consoles, second-hand consoles and anyone who wants the console back to as-new running.
Which one do you need?
- Loud but not shutting down: deep clean.
- Shutting down or overheating warnings: deep clean plus liquid metal.
- Grinding or silent fan: fan repair.
- Heat problems plus a loose or damaged HDMI port: full service.
