Console Repair in Lewisham: What Happens When You Bring Your PS5, Xbox or Switch In

If your PS5, Xbox or Nintendo Switch has stopped working properly, the hardest part is often not knowing what is actually wrong. Is it the HDMI port? Dust? A failing fan? Something more serious? At Minko’s Gaming on Manor Park Parade in Lewisham, we see consoles from across South East London every week, and most owners ask the same questions before they hand theirs over. Here is exactly what happens when you bring a console in for repair, what it costs and how to get ready.

Step 1: Tell us what is happening

Before you visit, it helps to note down the symptoms. When does the fault happen? Is there an error code? Does the console power on but show no picture, or does it switch itself off after a few minutes? Is the fan louder than it used to be? A short video of the problem is even better. The more we know up front, the faster we can point you in the right direction.

You can get in touch through our contact page or find more detail on our console repair page.

Step 2: The diagnostic (£80 minimum)

If the cause is not obvious, we start with a diagnostic. The diagnostic has an £80 minimum charge and it is how we find the real fault rather than guessing. Many problems look alike from the outside. A PS5 with no picture could have a damaged HDMI port, but the same symptom can come from other faults on the board. Testing first means you do not pay for parts you never needed.

Once we know what is wrong, we explain the fix and the price in plain English. Nothing goes ahead until you say yes.

Step 3: The repair

These are the repairs we carry out most often, with our standard prices:

  • PS5 HDMI port replacement: £85. The most common cause of “no signal” on a PS5, usually caused by a cable being pulled or knocked while plugged in. Read our guide on how to tell if it is the HDMI port.
  • Deep clean: £80. We strip the console down and remove the dust that builds up around the fan and heatsink. If your console sounds like a jet engine or runs hot, this is usually the fix.
  • Liquid metal refresh: £80. The PS5 uses liquid metal as its thermal compound. Over time it can need re-applying to keep temperatures under control.
  • Fan repair: £80 labour plus parts. We confirm the replacement fan or any other required parts before fitting anything.
  • PS5 full service: £160. A new HDMI port, a deep clean and fresh liquid metal in one visit. Ideal if your console is a few years old and has never been opened.

Not sure whether you need a clean or liquid metal? Our article on deep clean vs liquid metal explains the difference.

Will I lose my games and saves?

This is the question we hear most. Repairs such as HDMI port replacement, deep cleaning and liquid metal work do not involve your console’s storage, so your games and saves stay where they are. We still recommend backing up before any repair, just to be safe. PlayStation Plus and Xbox both offer cloud saves, and you can also copy saves to a USB drive.

Is it worth repairing, or should I buy a new console?

In most cases repair is much cheaper. A new PS5 costs several hundred pounds, while an £85 HDMI port or an £80 deep clean brings the console you already own back to life, with your setup and accessories unchanged. Repair also keeps working electronics out of landfill. If a fault turns out not to be worth fixing, we will tell you honestly after the diagnostic.

Warranty and payment

Every repair we carry out comes with a 90-day repair warranty. If the same fault comes back within that time, bring it back to us. You can pay by cash, card, bank transfer or Klarna, so you can spread the cost if you need to.

Tips to keep your console healthy after a repair

  • Leave around 10cm of space around the vents and keep the console out of closed cupboards.
  • Keep it on a hard, flat surface, not on carpet or a bed.
  • Unplug the HDMI cable gently and avoid moving the console while cables are attached.
  • Book a deep clean every year or two, especially if you have pets or the console lives near the floor.
